EXT On A PS4 Controller

In the fourth generation, the gamepad for the Sony PlayStation 4 game console has acquired some significant innovations compared to its predecessor. So, in addition to the touch panel, built-in speaker and the so-called lightbar, two connectors appeared at the bottom of the controller. One of them is a standard 3.5 mm headset port, just like on a smartphone. There is even a small image of headphones above it, so its purpose becomes immediately clear to any user. And here is the second port, which is marked as EXT, is clearly non-standard.

What Is the EXT On a Ps4 Controller?

The name itself refers to the word “extension”. As the name implies, this port is used to connect additional equipment, that is, an extension for the controller. These can be completely different things, but, unfortunately, there are not so many of them, we’ll analyze each of them in more detail below.

What Is the EXT Port on the Ps4 Controller For?

The EXT port of the PS4 controller acts as a proprietary USB 2 connector and is used to connect 3 types of external accessories. What plugs into the EXT port on PS4 controller:

  • Charging station. This device from Sony charges the controller very quickly, but you can also use third-party devices;
  • Mini keyboard can be connected to the controller. If you often communicate with your friends by text, then such an accessory may come in handy. After all, typing one letter at a time using the on-screen keyboard is very inconvenient. In addition, some third party headsets connect to EXT and 3.5 ports at the same time.
  • Headphones and microphones. Below we’ll analyze a small instruction for connecting headphones to the controller via the EXT connector.

How to Charge a Ps4 Controller Through EXT Port?

When you connect a DualShock 4 wireless controller to a PS4 system that is on or in rest mode, the controller’s battery starts charging. To check the charge level of your DualShock 4 wireless controller, press and hold the PS button for at least 1 second.

In idle mode, the DualShock 4 Wireless Controller lightbar slowly blinks orange. When charging is complete, the lightbar turns off. It takes about 2 hours to fully charge the controller.

Sony releases the official DualShock 4 EXT port charger. Such a station uses the lower port for connection. Usually, charging takes place via the micro USB port, to which you can connect a charger even from your smartphone. However, the station can charge the battery much faster. In addition to official products, there are also options from third-party manufacturers. But they all work according to the same principle.

An external battery can be connected to this port. The DualShock 4’s own battery runs out pretty quickly, which is especially frustrating in the middle of a game. However, by connecting an external power bank, you can continue to play. By the way, it all depends on the model: some are still connected via the USB port.

Setting Up Charging Your DualShock 4 Controller

When the PS4 system is turned off, the controllers won’t charge. If you want to charge your DualShock 4 wireless controller when you are not using your PS4 system, change the power saving settings and leave the PS4 system in rest mode.

  • go to Settings – Power saving settings – Select features available in rest mode – Power to USB;
  • select the Always or 3 hours option.

As you can see, setting up charging via the EXT port on PS4 controller is very simple and does not require any additional complex efforts.

Headphone Connection for Controller

If you are connecting headphones to the 3.5mm headset jack on the DualShock 4 Wireless Controller and you cannot hear sound from the headphones, or if the sound is too weak, make sure the plug is fully inserted into the jack. Disconnect and reconnect the headphones.

To output all audio to headphones:

  • select Settings – Devices – Audio Devices;
  • select Headphone Out – All Audio;
  • select the “Volume control (headphones)” option and press the right button to make sure the volume is not at minimum.

If the Headphone Out option is unavailable, it means that the controller did not recognize the headphones. Unfortunately Sony does not release original headphones yet, which can be used for EXT port on PS4 controllers. The blog authors have tried to keep you informed about EXT meaning on PS4 controllers. Now you know what this connector is for and we are sure that many of you have never even noticed it before. Connect a charging station or headphones to it and use all the controller’s functions to the maximum!
