If it seems to you that your computer is very hot and it is still hot, then most likely it doesn’t seem to you. The most common cause of computer overheating is the central processing unit (CPU). It is its excessive heating and operation at an increased rate that can adversely affect the operation of your device as a whole. Otherwise, you won’t have to buy a separate new part, but a new laptop or PC. Today we will try to figure out what the normal temperature for a CPU should be and what to do in case of overheating.
What Is a Good Temperature for CPU?
The processor is the most important component of the computer, on which the performance of almost all tasks depends. The operating temperature of the processor has a big impact on the computer. Overheating the CPU can damage your PC or cause significant performance degradation. This is why it is important to maintain a normal processor temperature.
Perhaps it would be silly to say that a certain range of typical CPU temperatures is optimal for all modern processors. Processors now surprise with their variety of parameters, and the way manufacturers combine these parameters. For example, the first time it is difficult to understand which processor is more powerful, with two cores, but a high clock speed, or with four cores, but a lower clock speed. And it is worth considering other parameters as well.
But where are we all leading? CPU good temperature depends on most of these parameters. And what is the normal temperature? It is obvious that each separate processor model has an individual “normal temperature”. If one system is rebooted at a processor temperature of 75 ° C, then the other system will operate relatively normally at an appropriate CPU temperature of 100 ° C. But this is undesirable due to the faster wear of the part.
Many users consider the best temperature for the CPU specified by its manufacturer in the specifications of the device. Others consider the optimal temperature to be no higher than 70-85 degrees in load. Moreover, for different processors, in their opinion, the optimum temperature is individual. However, these opinions aren’t entirely correct. The latter assumption makes professionals laugh at all. Crystals of all processors are made from the same materials using similar technologies. The assumption about individual good temperatures for CPU was born, apparently, from practical provisions. However, in theory, it is wrong.
There is a popular opinion among experts that after 80-85 degrees, an increase in the temperature of the silicon crystal by every 5 degrees reduces the processor’s service life by 2 times. There have even been some informal corroborating studies on this subject. Based on this, the usual CPU temperature can be considered the temperature up to 80 degrees in the load. In this case, the user can count on his normal work for more than 20 years. Of course, raising the operating temperature to 80 degrees will also shorten the life of the processor, but not so dramatically.
The user doesn’t need to worry about good processor temperature in idle mode if the temperature in the load doesn’t exceed the optimal one. It always falls below the CPU temperature in the load. However, the high temperature of the processor in idle mode may indicate the presence of hidden “miners” in the system. Normally, the processor is idle should heat up significantly less than in the load.
If we summarize everything, it turns out that good CPU temperature is a very vague indicator and there is no accuracy in this regard. However, you can rest assured 100% if your CPU temperature is in the following range:
- in idle mode – about 40-50 ° C;
- at load – about 70-85 ° C.
Normal CPU Temperature While Gaming
The stable operation of the processor at temperatures above 85 degrees is CPU normal temperature while gaming. Some users have been using processors in an overclocked state for several years, heating up to 100 degrees. However, such CPU temperature gaming greatly reduces the life of the device and heats the room well.
With a long-term operation of the processor at high temperatures or with a short-term increase to 200 degrees and above, irreversible changes occur. After that, the processor can no longer work stably, although the computer starts up. In some cases, the CPU becomes completely inoperative. However, such a high temperature cannot be reached on modern processors, they have overheating protection. That is, the maximum CPU temperature while gaming lies in the range slightly above 200 degrees, but the maximum allowable should preferably not exceed 100 degrees.
The processor, like some other components of your computer, has an integrated temperature sensor. You can view the temperature and compare it with a good temp for the CPU while gaming in BIOS, but if you don’t want to poke around in it or don’t know how to enter BIOS, then the best option for you would be to download a special program for this.

Next, install and simply run the utility by double-clicking on the shortcut on the desktop. Already on the very first loaded screen, you can see the temperature of the processor, video card and hard drive. If you need more detailed information about your components, you can visit the necessary sections. Look carefully, suddenly you were not sold what you were buying.
If, nevertheless, your indicators are significantly higher than the average core temperature CPU, then you need to lower it. There are several ways to lower your CPU temperature. Let’s take a look at them:
- Clean the processor cooler from dust. And not only a cooler, but everything where your hand can reach. This is the most common cause of computer overheating. With a soft brush, brush off all the dust inside the system unit. Then blow it out from there or carefully vacuum it up without damaging the microcircuit. Most often, this measure is sufficient to bring the temperature down to normal temperature for CPU while gaming.
- Check the case coolers. Maybe they are the ones who aren’t doing their job. Either they aren’t enough, or it is time to change them. Coolers that are installed on the ventilation of the PC case are usually cheap and wear out quickly, start to play, make noise, etc. Install new coolers with the largest possible diameter. They will work quieter and more efficiently.
- Remove the system unit from heat sources. This is also a common mistake made by beginners or inexperienced people. The computer itself generates heat during operation, and if it also stands next to the stove, then no fans will save it from overheating. All electronics should be kept away from heat sources and direct sunlight.
- Change thermal paste. Perhaps the thermal grease, which is the heat conductor between the processor and the heatsink of the processor cooling system, has ceased to fulfill its duties. There is air again between the heatsink and the processor. Then you need to change the thermal paste to return to good CPU temperature while gaming.
- Change the cooling system of the central processor. This is already the most extreme measure. It is used if there are some problems with the standard cooling system. And also if your processor is overclocked. Overclocked processors run at their limits and generate a lot more heat.
