Music!!! Turn it on and let it rock your socks off!! The music combines with all possible media, but today we will take only games. I’m gonna take the best songs in each decade from 1980 to 2020. Of course, there can argue about the top but for sure this music takes an important place in the history of gaming. Also, it’s interesting how this music goes from games to other media like films and even MEMES.

Early 1980–1990, Hippies, Rockers, Nintendo Fans, and Average PC Gaming Enjoyers

Early video game music was limited by primitive audio chips PSG and created a new music style called “chiptune”. Music has huge importance in games, giving the right atmosphere or feeling of rhythm, making the game more immersive. Big developing studios used to have their house bands.

In 1990 composer Motoaki Furukawa formed a group called Kukeiha Club. That was the first Konami s team of professional composers. They also had two official albums, Hope and Konami All-Stars: The Sentry-Bako Heisei 4 Nen Ban (1991).

Also to be mentioned: Alph Lyla (Capcom’s house band), S.S.T. Band (Segas house band).

Back in these dark days gaming was considered to be either for kids or nerds. Kings of the industry for sure were Nintendo, Sega. Arcade automata were in every market “Toss the coin to Pac-Man ” to beat unknown nerd record. This is the beginning of something bigger, everyone knew that, but nobody wanted to believe it. Ten years after the Big Explosion, the gaming industry started to get a huge amount of money, and since then this industry is considered to be one of the most profitable. Music in the games was as good as the higher popularity a game got, and this tendency stays to nowadays. It’s also because the big companies had an opportunity to hire professional musicians.

So let’s begin our travel through old school 16-bit music

  3. Super Mario bros. Overworld theme, Underworld Theme (1985)
  4. DuckTale s- Moon Theme (1987)
  5. Final Fantasy- Victory Theme (1987)

These songs have a huge influence on memes and all gaming industries. Super Mario becomes the king of platformers, which means back to those days absolute King of the gaming industry. The best RPG soundtrack goes to Final Fantasy. Also to be mentioned are Space Invaders (1978), Asteroids (1979), but this is mostly like a beat so u can feel the tempo of the game. Also, a lot of gamers would say that the Best Rpg soundtrack prize must go to World of Warcraft.

U can call me Donkey BONK but my god this is the golden age in the gaming industry. So many platforms, so many different games going out. Screaming for your money and attention. Rise of the piracy in Russia, Matrix, Vodka, and Rave. So as the technologies go a step further the music in games starts to sound like Bombombom and u started headbanging, electro guitars, sci-fi beats, epic, and orchestral soundtracks. Nintendo gets a nice competitor like Sony, computer gaming slowly rises from the ashes to the top. The top compositors like Masato Nakamura, Manami Matsumae, Michiru Yamane, Koji Kondo, Nobuo Uematsu opened the new level in-game soundtracks.

In 1994 Frank Klepacki, musician and video game composer started to work on Command&Conquer. That was his first experience in-game music and damn he created a crazy soundtrack. The group performing these tracks is called Tiberian Sons, music style Metal, Rock.

The best Nintendo soundtracks back to those days were Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time(1998) and Super Mario World (1990) and the best fantasy soundtracks of all time go to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time.

So here we are, this is where the evolution slowly stops and the music gets the prime form. High-resolution sound effects, music doesn’t sound like xylophone solos. This is RPG decade babe, everyone talking about Wow and Elder Scrolls, people spending tons of hours in Lineage 2, it’s time for the best fantasy game soundtracks. That is why orchestral music has a high influence back in that days. Everybody wanted to feel that Fantasy flow and they got it. The Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion gave as the most powerful and recognizable best fantasy game soundtrack ever, and of course, its epic sound variation later on

Nintendo takes off her crown, from now on Xbox and PlayStation fighting for the leadership. Pc starts to be the best platform for media pirates. Companies losing a huge amount of money because of pirates, small indie studios going out on the scene. Minecraft breaking all existing rules. Now even your mama can recognize the soundtrack from Minecraft.

To be mentioned are the best sci-fi game soundtracks: Mass Effect-Main Theme(2007), Dead Space-Main Theme(2008).

2010–2020 History Ends Here. Snapback to Reality. Mick Gordon Is a New King or How “I Met Your Cacodemon”

This is the Finish line, limited by past time. New compositors like Motoi Sakuraba with his deep dark best orchestral soundtracks waves, Mick Gordon with heavy riffs as hell in Doom(2016), good old Gustavo Alfredo Santaolalla with his calm and sad Last of Us theme. And of course an updated version of the Oblivion theme by Jeremy Soule, and the Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning best fantasy soundtracks ever.

Riot games making a huge contribution to in-game music in the last decade. Their virtual bands like KDA, Pentakill, getting millions of likes on youtube and promote their main cybersport discipline League of Legends.

Also, I didn’t mention the music from Star Wars because it starts from movies and then goes to games, and for sure if Star Wars started as a game it would have a golden statue for the best game soundtracks ever.
